COMMENT

One of the finest recordings of the tour and overall a surprisingly excellent release from Sabotage. Surprising? Well, in the respect that shows from the Hit N Run tour are not exactly the stuff of legend. That said, this is a very decent show featuring far less input from Najee and Kip Blackshire than normal - their lack of input means the show is far more focused with more emphasis on Prince. The show begins with a few minutes of Najee tooting his horn before the concert starts in ernest with the DAT intro and John Blackwell cueing into 'Uptown'. It's evident there are a number of technical difficulties throughout the show and the beginning especially has Prince screaming at the sound technician to correct problems - leading him to say to the crowd, "Welcome to our rehearsal". For the main part, the show is pretty basic for the Hit N Run tour but as always the interesting moments occur when prince strays from the norm. 'Let's Go Crazy' is proceeded by a 4 minute guitar warm-up which includes various riffs and the inclusion of 'Voodoo Child' (amongst others). The speech before 'When Will We Be Paid' is also worthy of note as it is remarkably similar to the basic notion used for 'Family Name' on The Rainbow Children. One other part of the show worth hearing again is the complete fuck-up of the drum machine during the interlude version of 'When Doves Cry' which runs at a completely different speed to the pre-recorded vocals - very, very funny and makes the show seem extremely amateur up to that point. The bonus tracks are a nice addition, however the shows are circulating in their complete form and can only be viewed as filler material on here. The quality is less impressive than the Richmond recording, but nothing is less than VG+. Doug E Fresh guests during the shows in Grand Rapids and Cleveland and manages to completely ruin what was (before he appears) an enjoyable performance. The packaging is in a similar vein to Sabotage's other Hit N Run release 'Hit N Run Denver' and is certainly one of their better efforts. Overall a very impressive recording of a decent Hit N Run concert.
