COMMENT
An excellent rehearsal in preparation for the upcoming Purple Rain tour and a pretty stunning quality soundboard recording considering it's age. Unfortunately this release is incomplete and missing around 12 minutes of the rehearsal towards the end. Prince begins the rehearsal by announcing (as was done on the tour) "Ladies and gentlemen, Prince and the Revolution". The intro to 'Let's Go Crazy' is one of the highlights of the rehearsal with various funny lyric changes by Prince. The first half of the rehearsal is pretty standard fare and varies minimally from the versions which were performed on the tour ("Detroit" is mentioned a few times, presumably as it was the venue of the opening few shows). 'God' features a fair amount of instrumentation work getting the crescendo portion of the song correct - much to Prince's annoyance as the band members fail to meet his high standards - never typified better than when he screams, "Well, if you put the motherfucking magazine down and play your part!". It also includes a closing portion including a Ray Charles-inspired 'America The Beautiful'. The rehearsal (or at least this version of it) closes with run-through versions of both 'Computer Blue' (containing some nice, ferocious guitar) and 'When Doves Cry'. As mentioned previously, the quality is stunning and very clear. Outwith what appears to be a tape-chew prior to the first verse on 'Let's Go Crazy' and a few seconds drop-out during 'God', there is nothing worth commenting on with regards the quality. The fact remains that this version of the rehearsal is incomplete which is a real shame. As this particular release dates from the infancy of bootleg cd's in 1990, the packaging is very basic and the tracklisting doesn't exactly reflect the content of the rehearsal ('Father's Song' and 'America The Beautiful' are not listed) - however the content is what is most important, and that's above any real criticism from me.
