Here I have a great early live recording of
Prince,
J Geils Band & George Thorogood.
October 11, 1981 - Memorial Coliseum - Los Angeles
J Geils Band:
1. Sanctuary
2. One Last Kiss
3. Musta Got Lost /
Prince:
4. Bambi
5. When You Were Mine
6. Jack U Off
7. Uptown (instrumental)
8. Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? (cuts off)
George Thorogood & The Destroyers:
9. House of Blue Lights
10. Cocaine Blues
11. One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer
Prince was doing his unreleased Controversy set and came out blazing on the title track (like Mott the Hoople when they open w/Drivin' Sister and all jumped around at once). But the good white folk had no idea what was going on. He got booed off during Jack you off. A Shame.
Non-Prince fans probably don't realize how famous - or infamous this concert appearance was. For those who don't know, Prince was really unknown back in 1981 with mainstream popularity about a year-and-a-half away and superstardom about 2-1/2 years away. The Rolling Stones fans obviously didn't "get" Prince with his high-heeled shoes, knee stockings and panties, and the fans near the stage pelted him with garbage and cans. The fans unhappiness seemed to hit its peak at the end of "Jack U Off" where the fans booed very loudly - and that can be heard very clearly on this recording. Personally, I have been looking for this for years - I didn't even think it actually existed. All Prince fans will be salivating over this torrent amd I thank you very much for it!!!
To me, I find it hilarious because in just a few short years, all these people's children, nephews and neices would be idolizing Prince - I guess that's pretty ironic!!!
Interestingly enough, Prince played an incredible guitar solo at the end of "Bambi" - you would figure the Stones fans could have appreciated that.....
Here are a few cool quotes from Mick and Keef two years later when asked about Prince getting booed at this performance:
Keith: Prince has to find out what it means to be a prince.
That's the trouble with conferring a title on yourself before
you've proved it. That was his attitude when he opened for us on the tour, and it was insulting to our audience. You don't try to knock off the headline like that when you're playing a Stones crowd. You'd be much better off just being yourself and projecting that. He's a prince who thinks he's a king already. Good luck to him.
Mick: I talked to Prince on the phone once after he got two cans thrown at him in L.A. He said he didn't want to do any more shows. (Laughs) God, I got THOUSANDS of bottles and cans thrown at me! EVERY kind of debris. I told him, if you get to be a really big headliner, you have to be prepared for people to throw bottles at you in the night. (Laughs) PREPARED TO DIE!
