COMMENT
Disc 1 contains a near-80 minute soundcheck and is one of those rare moments on a bootleg where you cannot help but sit up and pay attention. Not only are the songs rehearsed of exceptional quality, but Prince is constantly interacting with the NPG Music Club members present and there are a number of genuinely funny moments. The rehearsal is very loose and (in terms of actual performance) begins with a great length instrumental jam with some serious bass. 'The Ride' is up next and features some added lyrics from 'Telemarketer's Blues'. 'The Payback' is similar in the respect it contains various verses from '4 The Tears In Your Eyes'. One lucky member of the NPGMC gets a chance to join the band for a loose guitar jam and he is surprisingly competent as it develops with various band members grabbing a solo. The soundcheck ends on a real high with a scorching version of 'Joy In Repetition'. The quality of the recording is above any criticism from me - sure there are a number of small drop-outs during the beginning of the soundcheck, and the sound can be a little bassy - however the quality is certainly a match for the content ; and that is a blessing. Discs 2, 3 & 4 contain the main New York show and it is without doubt my personal favourite show if the entire tour. Clocking in at a little under 3 hours it is one of the longest shows of the tour and is undoubtedly one of the best performances from the US leg. The show begins with a very guitar heavy 'The Rainbow Children' and it sets the tone for what is perhaps one of the least horn-driven shows from 2002 - the horn section are in full effect throughout, but they Prince is far less reliant on them than on many other shows. The show features an appearance by Larry Graham during 'Sing A Simple Song' and by Q-Tip during 'Didn't Cha Know'. The piano medley is one of the (many) highlights which lasts in excess of 30 minutes and includes a reference to the September 11th attack on New York during 'Purple Rain'. The quality of the recording is extremely high with a nice healthy dose of audience which adds an electric, very enthusiastic atmosphere. There is a skip during 'Another Star', however considering the quality of the remainder of the recording, and that this is the only noticeable flaw - it's very minor and certainly not worth criticising. Discs 5 & 6 contain the aftershow and includes 3 tracks which would later surface on the official "One Nite Alone....Live!" release. The 2 hour aftershow features appearances by George Clinton, Larry Graham, Musiq, Doug E Fresh and last but by no means least Alicia Keys. The opening version of 'Joy In Repetition' sets the tone for what is undoubtedly amongst the best aftershows of the tour with many highlights. George Clinton's 'We Do This' is funky beyond belief and Alicia Key's version of 'How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore' with Prince on keyboards is a very rare treat. So what do we say about this release? The sheer amount of material performed over the space of 6 hours is astounding and for that reason alone this release should be praised. The quality of the recordings may be lacking the polish and cleanliness of some other US audience recordings, but it does not disappoint and is worthy of an overall EX grading.
