Here’s a snapshot of Rod Stewart’s best years after a slew of hit singles made him a superstar on both sides of the Atlantic. It’s a hits galore show with hardly a nod or a wink to his years as a member of The Faces. The only chances he takes are on two songs that show his love of soul music. He sings Luther Ingram’s If Loving You Is Wrong and Sam Cooke’s Twisting The Night Away.

Even at this early stage, he left the Faces only in 1975, the ballads outnumbered the rock ‘n’ roll songs. By the time of 1976’s A Night On The Town, his albums had become a formula of ballads holding up the start and finish with fast numbers inserted almost as fillers. There’s also a rare cover of The Beatles’ Get Back that’s ragged. The band and Stewart are clearly inebriated which sets the stage for a rousing rendition, with crowd participation, for his biggest hit, Maggie Mae.

This concert is sourced from vinyl discs used for radio broadcast in the ‘70s. It is taken from two different mixes of the same concert. It took a blend of both records to make up the complete show. Against the tracks are indicated their source. Most tracks are from a 90-minute special aired early 1979, and four others when a highlight show was re-broadcast during the summer of '79.
