Rolling Stones Shanghai Banging April 8th 2006

Rolling Stones

Shanghai Banging 2006

Live at Shanghai Grand Stage, China, April 8, 2006.

By all accounts, reading the reviews of this show at the It's Only Rock n Roll [IORR] fan site, this was an almost all-foreigners concert with only a smattering of Chinese nationals in the audience. You are reminded of the old Colonial concessions where the colonial powers were given enclaves to run. But the Stones don't care. They still give of their best as evidenced by the chumminess between Mick and Keith and even Ron Wood is playing his best.

This show is short by Stones standard, just under two hours. But it's a solid show. Too bad Mick and the Stones still have not played for the Chinese. Perhaps because of the language barrier, the Stones rock 'n' roll of the past has no fans in China. Cui Jian's generation and the current generation were all inspired by punk rock.

The Sex Pistols or The Clash would have gone down well in China. But then they wouldn't be allowed in. Unlike the Stones, their music and their values still represent a threat.

After Mick sings the opening Start Me Up, he practices his Mandarin "nihou Shanghai?" And if any native Chinese were in the audience, they were probably attached to an expatriate arm, as Mick had suggested at the press conference. You can barely hear a cheer on this excellent audience recording released on the Japanese [?] Exile label every time Mick practices his Mandarin. So why play China? Why not when the lure is the "filthy lucre"?

Another concession to the locals was the inclusion of Chinese rocker Cui Jian who according to eyewitnesses was struggling with the notes and lyrics to Wild Horses. Another mismatch. Even when Cui Jian thanks the Stones in Mandarin, there's hardly a cheer from the audience who probably don't understand what he's saying.

Hi.

My first post on an intriguing site. Just recovering from the København gig. The guitars were so loud they blew my head off. So it´s countdown to London, two shows. And the Stones convention at the Bonnington Hotel. Time to get some overtime in.
