This will be my Part 1 of 4 shows posted tonight.
Doing a little travel through time tonight.. We'll call this seeds of Journey....
SANTANA
5-1-1971
Montreux & Beat Club Compilation
Casino De Montreux, Montreux, Switzerland (5-1-1971) &
Bremen, Germany, Beat Club (4-22-1971)
This is a somewhat common set of recordings. There are a couple of sources for this floating around but I haven't heard any of the others so I can't tell you which set of recordings this is. Information above is what was on my CD for this show (venue/city/date).
I believe Santana played 3 shows in Montreux from April 30th to May 2nd 1971. This could be a compilation from those dates as Samba Pi Ti is listed twice in this set. (Had to look this up in google.)
What I really like about Santana in the early 70's is Neal and Carlos trade alot of solos on "Everything's Coming Our Way", "Jungle Strut", "Toussaint L'Overture", and "Taboo". Alot of people tap Carlos for doing the work on these songs but it's actually Neal too, including his kick ass lead on "Everybody's Everything". What's cool is the two different styles, Carlos tends to play a little more restrained and melodic while Neal is more energetic and blistering with that wah-wah laced vibe. Very cool!
2 Years later, Neal & Gregg would go on to form Journey.
