Ten Summoner's Tales (a play on both Sting's Gordon Sumner's name and Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales) was a more upbeat follow-up album in 1993 to the earlier and more introspective The Soul Cages. Apart from being an Emmy nominee, some of the album's standout tracks include If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, It's Probably Me (a different version featured in the Lethal Weapon 3 movie) and Shape Of My Heart (featured in the movie Leon).
This set was recorded about three months after the release of Ten Summoner's Tales. The backup band is stellar - reappearing from the album are David Sancious on keyboards, Dominic Miller on
acoustic guitar, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums - and Sting himself on bass.
More than anything else, the set showcases Sting's accessibility - the songs are first and foremost easy on the ear, nevermind if the content can be substantial: "You could say I'd lost my belief in our politicians/They all seemed like game show hosts to me... I never saw no military solution/That didn't always end up as something worse" (If I Ever Lose My Faith In You) or the prodigal son story given a mighty twist: "The maidens numbered only one/But there weren't seven brides for seven brothers/I knew I had to get rid of the others." Even The Beatles A Day In The Life doesn't get much of a reworking and Sting trawls out older songs such as Englishman In New York (from Nothing Like The Sun), Fortress Around Your Heart (Dream Of The Blue Turtle) and even Every Breath You Take.
Reported to be taken from an FM broadcast, the playing is exquisite and the sound is excellent.
