well, as some of you know, I've always dug Tesla, in the sense that their rockin' stuff still "rocks", and their beautiful stuff (Love Song, What You Give, Paradise) still sounds beautiful 15 years later, vs. stuff like "Without You" by the Crue, that cheesy Aerosmith "Get A Grip" schlock...or ANY Def Leppard ballad...that combined with the fact they came across as just everyday guys a few years into their career (ok, 87-92 had a lil mascara and hair, but they were FAR from Poison)

aaaaanyhow, I haven't been around here much due to throwing this together (had to transfer AND listen to over 100 shows), not sure if anyone is interested, but they have a HUGE "classic rock" influence that maybe many of you aren't even aware of. (oh yeah, did I mention the Crowes jammed with them on Honky Tonk Women, The Last Time AND Seasons Of Wither acoustically in Boston in '90, and that's on here???)

here's what I've thrown together so far (cds # 5 and 6 in the next post, #2, 3, and 4 will be elaborated on more like #'s 1, 5 and 6 at a future date...ALL of the "specs" are available, this was just from the top of my head with some sloppy notes in front of me)):

cd#1 - the "evolution" of Cumin' Atcha Live (ALL of these songs just about have accurate dates to the day, venues, etc, I'm just doin' this from memory)

1. undecided version from '87, leaning towards the earliest one I have, as it's fun to listen to the band when they "were kids".

2. undecided version from '89, looking for one with "something special"

3. CAL > Truckin - live from '90, from one of the acoustic shows, haven't decided for sure, there's 2 FM broadcasts to pick from, and 2 really nice audience sources...if only that missing 5th show would "turn up"

4. CAL - live from Irvine CA, 7/5/92...this is perhaps the LOUDEST version I've ever heard of this song, it's a crying shame that the tapers deck started to speed up/slow down, the 1st 4 songs from this show sound great, then the quality starts to suffer quickly...still, it gives you a GREAT idea of what they sounded like on this tour...IN YOUR FACE!

5. CAL > Baby Please Don't Go (Nugent, AC/DC, Chuck Berry {I think}) > CAL - Tempe AZ, 2/22/95...a BLISTERING version sans Tommy :sad saddy face here: with a GREAT interpolation of BPDG in the middle, you couldn't ask for much better

6. CAL > The Gate > Invited - Camden NJ '95...the ONLY version of "The Gate > Invited" (to the best of my knowledge, not counting radio versions), it SMOKES!...from the tour opening for Skynyrd.

7. CAL - Universal City, CA '95, same tour, but the 1st show Tommy was back from "recycling"...a GREAT sounding version.

8. undetermined version from '01

9. undetermined version from '02 (acoustic)

10. undetermined version from '04 headline ITN tour.

cd2, ROCKIN' originals, some VERY rarely played

1, 2 - Action Talks (with false start, AZ '96)
3, 4 - Change In The Weather - with "false start", i.e. power failure, the Germans were CHANTING for them, Europe '91
5 - Cover Queen - SEVEN minute version, 5/23/89
6 - Did It For The Money - Dusseldorf '87, pre-dates TGCR by 18 months
7 - Ez Cum Ez Go - 12/31/95
8, 9- Had Enough > Don't De-Rock Me > drum solo > Don't De-Rock Me - Sacramento, 12/31/92, BEST sounding live version of DDRM known, it's actually listenable compared to that '91 Euro opening set
10 - Flight To Nowhere - Concord CA '89
11 - Heaven's Trail (either 5/23/89 Minneapolis or 4/19/96 Mesa AZ, possibly both due to differences in the "jam")
12 - Lady Luck (version yet to be determined)
13 - Makin Magic - Concord CA '89
14 - Rock Me To The Top (version yet to be determined)
15 - Recognize - Hampton Beach 6/15/02, the "embryonic" version from 18 months pre album released, again, may have different music/lyrics, haven't done a side-by-side
16 - Toke About It - Pittsburgh '92
17 - Yesterdaze Gone - Concord '89 (I think, not sure)

cd3, ROCKIN covers, ELECTRIC

1 - Children's Heritage - either London '91 {not yet on cd}, or Minneapolis '04...maybe that should be Minny '02, '04 don't sound right...damn sloppy notes)
2 - Cotton Fields (yet to be determined, NUMEROUS versions, jammed out at the end)
3 - I Ain't Superstitious (version yet to be determined, most likely 6/11/89)
4 - I Just Wanna Make Love To You (either an '04 version or one from '89)
5 - It's A Long Way To The Top - Roseburg '05
6 - Rock The Nation - Dusseldorf '87
7 - Rock You Like A Hurricane - Roseburg '05
8 - Sweet Leaf - Mansfield '89, ONLY known live version
9 - Sympathy For The Devil - Atlanta '02, ONLY known electric version, and it SMOKES!
10 - Talk Dirty To Me - Mansfield '89, ONLY known live version, yeah, the Poison song, when they opened a few shows for them
11 - War Pigs - Hampton Beach '02 or Providence '01, undecided

cd4, ROCKIN covers, ACOUSTIC

1 - Edison's Medicine - Philly '05 (again, if there are "better" versions of ANY of these '05 acoustic songs, offer the suggestion)
2 - Hang Tough - Philly '05
3 - I Wanna Be Sedated - Buffalo '05
4 - Into The Now - Philly '05
5 - Immigrant Song - version yet to be determined
6 - Miles Away - Philly '05
7 - Sympathy For The Devil - NYC '02
8 - War Pigs - NYC '02
9 - Yesterdaze Gone - Philly '05
10/11/12/13/14- Honky Tonk Women (w/ members of the Black Crowes)> The Last Time > Flintstones theme song > Seasons Of Wither > jam/cuts...my FAVORITE 11m of recorded Tesla music, this is the "jam" at the end of the Boston '90 acoustic club show and oh my goodness, what a display of FUN!

unfortunately, the taper ran out of tape at the very end, so the last (most likely) 1-2 minutes is missing, still, even though the sound quality is "subpar", you'll still get a kick out of this SPONTANEOUS display of musicianship

- - - - -

cd #5 - middle (tempo) of the road...

1. A Little Bit Of Something - 12/31/95 Sacramento CA...most of you already have this version (SORRY for choppin' up the show into "fours", but you kids have to be "learned" somehow...haha), so not much to say...best sounding version I know of, though Chicago 1/20/96 and Modesto 1/3/96 are close

2. Breaking The Chains {Dokken} - New York, '90 acoustic show...yep, the Dokken tune with Don guesting, this is also taken from a 1g FM tape, not from that single cd comp that's been on Ebay off and on over the years...I've no idea how that one sounded, but this one is pretty phat.

3. Change In The Weather - New York, Irving Plaza, 3/7/02...along with "Yesterdaze Gone", this is my favorite reworking of an electric Tesla tune, they make it a completely different version in comparison to the original...whereas YG acoustic is more of a romp, this is all "bluesed out" with a completely different rhythm riff and pace....VERY good stuff indeed.

4. Do You Feel Like I Do (Peter Frampton) - New Jersey '92...this is a great tune that was played frequently as an encore number during the '92 PS tour, along with "The Joker" by Steve Miller {included at the end of this set}...obviously an exercise in Frankie's virtuosity, it seemed to go over well wherever played

5. 40 Below - Boston, Paradise, '90 acoustic show...yep, the country standard "Well it's 40 below and I don't give a fuck...."...a quick version, maybe not the whole song but a good chunk of it.

the Boston '90 show, I'll say it again, was THE SHIZZLE!

6. Hang Tough - Philly '05

7. Heaven 911 - 6/15/02...mainly included as it (along with "Recognize, also included on cd #2) were in an 'embryonic' stage...this version may have different lyrics or not (haven't listened to both side by side), it seems the music is somewhat different when compared to the studio version.

8. It's Only Rock & Roll (Rolling Stones) - New Jersey '89....A CLASSIC rendition of the Stones staple, with members of Great White joining in at the end of Tesla's set...I'm ALWAYS looking for '89 shows of either Great White OR Tesla from this tour, as both bands alternated headlining every other show, and sometimes members of Tesla sat in with GW for their encore on a "jam tune"...I'm in the works right now in acquiring a couple of covers they did back then (ala "Sweet Leaf", "Talk Dirty To Me") that will knock your socks off (think AC/DC, etc...)

bottom line: search lists, tapetrader.com, etree, etc and find them '89 shows...there's gold in them thar hills!

9. solo > Little Suzi - New Jersey 6/7/89...a cool little guitar solo into LS that wasn't played too often back then, nothing jaw-dropping but still pretty neat.

10. "South Sacramento Shuffle" - Sacramento 12/31/92...taken from the same legendary '92 NYE gig as "Rocky Raccoon" (cd 6) and "Don't De-Rock Me > Had Enough" (cd 2), this is a little acoustic improv during the acoustic set by none other than Frankie Hannon...a little over 2 minutes long, though it's in quotes, it was introduced as the SSS by Frankie before playing commenced, so who am I to argue.

get ready to shuffle.

11. Shine Away - Philly '05

12. Show Me The Way (Peter Frampton) - yet another Frampton classic, this was done only during the '02 acoustic shows, to the best of my knowledge...really good version, the acoustic setting enhances the music.

13. Sweet Home Alabama {Lynyrd Skynyrd} > Signs....OF COURSE "Signs" had to be included, I tried to soften the blow by digging up this version from San Diego on 2/21/95, where they did about a minute long tease into the FMAJ hit...fuck all if I can remember if Tommy was in or out at this point (was at the show the next night in Tempe), I think he was out...

14. Sympathy For The Devil {acoustic} (Rolling Stones) - New York 3/7/02...what else is there to say here??? not much other than KICKASS choice of a cover tune...it's long, has a funky beat, and has GREAT guitar solos....it may get bumped to cd#4, haven't decided...

15. The Joker (Steve Miller) - New Jersey '92...usually paired with Frampton's DYFLID before their "encore" (ya know, that 'amplifiers' thang), you could tell the band was having FUN when they tore through these 2 classics...plus Stevie "guitar" Miller always makes the ladies swoon (if not their panties all wet)

16. We're No Good Together - London '91...this date is confusing me a bit, as the only London show I'm aware of (11/11/91) I haven't put to cd yet...though it might be from the FM broadcast from a few weeks earlier...they were in Europe supporting the Scorpions and were in the UK twice, in early October and again in mid-November for some headline gigs...gonna have to root this one out.

17. What A Shame - Philly '05

cd#6 - {hopefully all 18 "songs" (a few are just 1 minute teases) fit on one cd, if not, it'll be expanded to 2cds)

1. Across The Universe (Beatles) - Minneapolis MN, First Avenue, 1/17/96...the FULL song, this is a full on surprise TREAT...a very plaintive Jeff vocal that floats over the simple melody played expertly by the band, it's nearly 4 minutes long, and a great starting point for this cd.

2. theremin intro > Before My Eyes (either from 6/7/89 or a '92 show)...this is a really cool thing they did when playing this song live, it only adds about 30 seconds to the song, but it's kinda spacey in a Styx/Zeppelin kinda way.

3. Caught In A Dream - Philly '05

4. Closing Time (Merle Haggard) - Mesa AZ, Amphitheater, 4/19/96...another FULL song, nearly 3 minutes, and in a way it's totally symbolic of where the band was headed at the time...Jeff's voice was SHOT, Tommy was gone, and the band was playing what was to be their FINAL complete show of a somewhat successful tour (a show at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas just days earlier had over 4,000 attendees, according to Performance Magazine, the next night in Los Angeles was cancelled and the tour finale in Reno was scrapped 4-5 songs in due to Jeff's voice being completely obliterated)...anyhow, besides those things that appear negative on the surface, a couple of tour staples were dropped (this show was only 105 minutes where most others clocked in right at 2 hours) and this lil' gem was dropped in the acoustic set.

a truly MAGICAL moment most one-offs are, and this one does NOT disappoint.

5. Come To Me - Philly '05

6. "Fool For Your Lovin'" {artist unknown}...this is from a 1g copy of the FM broadcast of the New York '90 acoustic show with Don Dokken...not sure if this is the actual song title, it's a slow, grinding blues number that again, was never played again.

7. Love Song - leaning toward the Boston '90 acoustic version, as the band was on FIRE that night, but the quality is a little sub-par...does anyone have a FAVORITE version of LS, with either some extra jamming or something special?

8. Let It Be (Beatles)- most likely the 7/7/92 San Diego version (pretty sure it's the 'longest'), it's only a minute and a quarter tease before Paradise, I might just pair it with Paradise as an intro...still to be decided.

8.5. Paradise, version yet to be determined.

9. Red House {Jimi Hendrix/Traditional} who has a copy of this from that '05 show where the guy jammed with them on stage on cd???...need this one bad.

10. Rocky Raccoon (Beatles) - from 12/31/92 Sacramento CA, Arco Arena...yet another Beatles gem, thrust into the middle of their 45m acoustic set on NYE, the WHOLE song, though the whole band doesn't participate, to my recollection (don't remember any drums)...these guys must really like the Beatles

11. Song & Emotion - 11/6/91 in Germany opening for the Scorpions, this is the FIRST time this song was ever played onstage, as per Jeff's pre-song banter...included mainly due to being a special moment for a pretty special song.

12. Stir It Up - Philly '05

13. The Wind Cries Mary {Jimi Hendrix} - from San Diego 7/7/92, it's only a 1:18 long teaser, but it sounds pretty damn good.

REALLY damn good.

14. Try So Hard - from Camden NJ '95 opening for Skynyrd, this song was RARELY played live at all...certain "Bust A Nut" tracks are gems in the rough when found played live on tape, this one is no exception

15. What You Give - a "teaser" from the acoustic '90 Boston gig, this is AGAIN a FTP (first time played), they only did about a minute and a half of it, but it's pretty cool as it predates "Psychotic Supper" by nearly a year.

16. What You Give - Universal City CA 5/24/95...from one of the first shows widely shared here, from possibly if not probably my best recording...incredible clarity, and again, it's was Tommy's 1st show back after a "recycling" session, so it's kinda extra cool.

17. You Can't Always Get What You Want (Rolling Stones) - from Chicago 1/20/96, this teaser was performed quite frequently during the acoustic set, this is the longest version I'm aware of existing on tape

most likely, cds #7 and 8 will be the 155m NYE '92 show I captured by them, cd #9 will be a "Bar 7" show (Jeff and Tommy's side project in the late '90's), and cd #10 will be just "stuff", like guitar solos, teases of George Michael's "Faith" (it musta been an inside joke), Frank Hannon band (his new solo project) stuff, and that kind of crap.

as always,

discuss:

there's about 4 more discs of stuff "in the works"...but I need that proverbial 'time'.

I love Tesla, but I don't really have anything to trade since everything I have is from this site. If you got any soundboards form the late 80's early 90 that would be cool to hear. Just bought their new live dvd good stuff.

Holy Crap! I want all those songs for the hours of shredding and jamming. That's a lot of shit. I only have two dvds to trade. One of them 2.07.96 in New York is without Tommy Skeoch. It is the show were Frank handled all the guitar parts with a funky, crescent moon shaped guitar. It didn't seem bad and Frank had some killer riffs and fills but it's quality is not great. It looks like a bad vhs.

I also have another dvd from South Carolina in xx.xx.02. This show is 6 years later and they have a bigger stage and set and Tommy is with them and he rips it up. This looks a lot better. Shot from the balcony of a medium size venue with mostly good sharp medium close ups to wide crowd shots with the band.

I hope you don't already have these but if you do would you donate to the cause and post them here anyway. I know that would make some Tesla fans very happy for new live versions of their favorite songs. That collection you put together sounds great. Do you have many videos of shows?

Thanks.

in the next 12 months, for sure (I've been kinda waiting for them to release their official one, which barring disaster, should be this Christmas season)

THEN I can make sure there is nothing "duplicitious" (you know, duplicated)
