Couple of little things i sometimes do is to use more than one kit , Like you say Goport main kit on track 10 , other kits on 11 , 12 , so you can use an orchestra kit along with a rock kit , gives you lots more options , and the really must do tip is to use Logical edit on your drums , and all other instruments for that matter , where by you can automatically alternate volume and velocity in one fell swoop , saves you doing it all by hand , great post tho !

Excellent tip thanks Linda (or bluesy?).
I have been avoiding the logical editor for ages but I had a go tonight and managed to set up some velocity altering presets which really do make life easier.
Many thanks indeed

Looking into the logical editor a little closer there are some great random volume editing abilities. However you do have to play around with the to and from values depending on which vst drum plugin you are using(there is a logical edit volume preset that you can easily edit). For example I have found the hi-hiats on battery work best when you set the volume perameters between 88-105, this allows for 3 different layer samples plus random velocities.
Remember to only highlight the beats you want changing or else you will find that your carefully phrased snare rolls will suddendly be wiped (good job there is an undo )
It really is worth setting up a load of different logical velocity edits and trying them all out. Different vst drum instruments have the sample layers mapped in different manners.
I realise this sounds a little complicated but it really is worth experimenting with as it takes a lot of the manual editing problems out of the equation.

lol! glad to be of service to you.
Just a tip. battery 2 has channels which make it very easy to use effects on specific drums/cymbals. say if you want to add compression to the bass drum - assign it to, say, channels 1-2, and in the lane view click on vst instruments to expand the view. on the batt2 channel click on the + and it will list all the tracks. on channel 1-2, click the "e" (edit channel settings) to call up the vst track properties. click on one of the empty vst slots and got to vst dynamics and select compressor from the preset list.
You can also set up fx channels that can be mixed in via the output channels on the right of the edit channel settings window. Check out the help for more info.
1 more thing. if you want to have your drums panned (for tom rolls etc) then simply assign each drum to a different channel and pan them on the vst channels
Have fun mate

Help
Gosport
Hi. This is a cry for help, and a chance for you to make some money. My lad is 14, he is guitar mad and so I have bought him cubase 5. I haven't a musical bone in my body. So ... I was wondering if you would come over to Pompey and give him some starter lessons?
He wants to make his own backing tracks, mix music etc.
I will pay for your journey and your time, what ever within reason.
Just let me know what you think would you?
Cheers in advance. Tony
