I'm a bit confused. There is a FAQ stating Any music you post should be considered public domain...

Words are protected, but music isn't?

That FAQ is basically stating that anything you post (in other words, your personal music or lyrics) isn't protected from anyone taking it from this site. It has nothing to do with posting copyrighted music or lyrics as mentioned above.

I guess I'm still confused. I pretty much register all of my copyrights (13 so far) with the LOC. I'm not worried about anyone stealing anything, in fact that would be really nice if they "stole" my music or words and actually got a hit published. I would be set.

The problem is that if an author places their work in the public domain, they irrevocably give up all rights to that work. This site's policy is that any music placed here is placed into the public domain. Therein lies the problem.

The main thing is that we have no way of keeping people from stealing it, it's not a policy as much as a disclaimer. There is simply no way we can monitor everything posted here and we have to protect ourselves. If you hold a copyright on something you post, I would make that clear when you post it to be safe.

While I would love to share some of my lyrics with people here and there everywhere, it's too much of a risk to lose something so great I have spent time writing. I would recommend anyone who doesn't want their lyrics stolen, to resist temptation of online sharing of lyrics and hold on to them, only to display to them to people in person.
