The Dusty Road or Jacob Long
hmm, bit of a discrepancy in verse length.
Anyway
As I walked along the dusty road, that led away from home
I met a girl with coal black hair, and skin as white as foam
Good morning sister, I said to her, won't you walk along with me
for I am going far away, and I need some company
She looked at me with sky blue eyes, and said, tell me all your troubles dear
For I have a heart as soft as down and a sympathetic ear
Oh sister sister I am troubled, but you are troubled too
Though if you have the time, I'll tell my tale to you.
I had a son called Jake, he was strong and brave
But they hanged him falsely for a thief, and I laid him in his
grave
It was not the law that did it, but the crowd that bayed for blood
They took him from the jailhouse and hanged him in the wood
Oh tell me sir the reason why this dreadful deed was done
Oh tell me sir the reason for the murder of your son
The reason it is is simple, it's one you've heard before
my son was killed because he was black and poor
Oh tell me sir the name of your son who died
oh tell me sir, the name of your murdered child
Jacob long I said
now my son is dead
I am left alone
my heart is like a stone
She fell into my arms, and these words I heard her say
I was to marry Jacob at 3 o clock today
so we walked along that dusty road, looking for a place
where they won't take your life for your colour or your race
Well I hope that brightened someone's day
