The Power to End it All
OK, guys. I read this really sobering book by William Brinkley called the Last Ship . It was about this naval destroyer that is part of a massive global nuclear strike in the late years of the Cold War (I know the Cold War is over, but bear with me). Anyway, these sailors are horrified to find out that there is really no one home to communicate with, all of the places they visit (Europe, Africa, Australia) are utterly contaminated with radioactive fallout, and they fear there is nowhere to run to from the imminent approach of fallout clouds. After facing all sorts of obstacles, they find a base in Antarctica, where it is totally clean. The book basically ends there, leaving one to fill in the blanks.
Now that you know the background, here is why I wrote this song. I feel an intense distaste - which was only made stronger by the book - for nuclear arms. Our president and a few other world leaders pretty much have the sole right to launch these puppies whenever they feel like (correct me if I'm wrong). I know it's illegal, but who would be able to try them after the apocolypse came and went? Anyway, enough ranting, check out the lyrics. I'm writing the music to the song right now, I'm thinking it will have a Rammstein/Children of Bodom edge to it.
“The Power to End it All”
Words and Music by Michael Evans
Verse 1
With a blinding flash, in the blink of an eye
A cloud of fire envelops the sky
All it takes is the word of one man
To turn the key that begins the end
Wars are won and wars are lost
No one ever considers the cost
In this war, there can be no winners
All that shall remain is a nuclear winter
Pre-Chorus
Don’t let this be our last stand
This is my only demand
Consider the lives of our children
To forsake their future is a mortal sin
Verse 2
Our leaders are playing a dangerous game
They can hide in bunkers; it’s all the same
Ordering death is easy if you don’t see it
Especially if you’re an unscrupulous piece of shit
War means money and we must need a lot
Our leaders are never happy with what they’ve got
A world divided over resources limited
A military in human life not interested
Pre-Chorus
Don’t let this be our last stand
This is my only demand
Consider the lives of our children
To forsake their future is a mortal sin
Chorus
They have the power to end it all
They’re in charge; it’s their call
We have the power to end it all
It’s up to us to break down the wall
Verse 3
Whether it’s one man or many that has the key
It is up to us to make them see
Pressing that button can only bring hurt
And render all living things inert
A thunderous roar echoes in my ears
I wonder if this could be the end of man’s years
Centuries of progress, centuries of hate
For our redemption we can only wait
Pre-Chorus
Don’t let this be our last stand
This is my only demand
Consider the lives of our children
To forsake their future is a mortal sin
Chorus
They have the power to end it all
They’re in charge; it’s their call
We have the power to end it all
It’s up to us to break down the wall
Outro
They must not end it all
Break down the wall
We must end it all
Break down the wall
