I just watched Elvis On Tour on TCm and wondered about Thus Spoke Zarathustra (2001 A Space Odyssey) Theme. It sounds very different and jazzier than any other versions I have heard from this time period (the obvious being Aloha From Hawaii). Is this a studio recording that we hear as opposed to the versions that the orchestra played? If not then where are these versions from, I have not seen them listed on Flynn's Elvis Page. Thanks!

Joe Guercio may have rewritten it for the movie.

Since the scene shows a number of Elvis getting ready backstage shots, from different venues, they may have wanted to pick up the tempo for the film.

Waiting for Elvis at a concert is one thing, waiting on film is quite another

I agree the copyright was the reason...Interestingly, when I saw the theater version of EOT last week, they also had to delete "Johnny B. Goode" from the opening credits as well. Thank Chuck Berry for that. This isn't he first time that song has had to been removed from an Elvis DVD - it wasn't in the remastered "Aloha From Hawaii" DVDs either for the same reason.
For the theatrical EOT, they used a live version of "Don't Be Cruel" (with the 'before I kick your a**) left in and looped it a time or two until the credits were done.

When I saw the TCM version it still had Johnny B Goode as the intro, interesting other people are saying that its been replaced. Where does Don't Be Cruel come from? Is it live or the studio version, because I noticed a studio version during the vintage clips section that led into an early live version of Don't Be Cruel (right before the Sullivan version of Teddy Bear).

No one asked why they didn't use the "classic version" of the theme

And saying "copyright" didn't answer anything, except why thy didn't use the standard version, which wasn't asked in the first place

They asked about the "newer" version and "where are these versions from"

Anyone help anymore with that???

Nope, I struck out. Google searches turned up nothing...Ernst Jorgenson's "A Life In Music" doesn't mention it (probably because it was never an official release), and it's not on any of the bootleg rehearsal/outtake CDs nor on any of the full concert releases of the shows used in the film. They all have the 'right' 2001.
Since the 2001 IS in the Aloha show from a year later in 1973, and in "Elvis In Concert" from 1977 but even as of just last week's theater showing of "EOT" the 'alternate version' was used, it would appear that it is MGM who can't come to terms with whoever owns the 2001 Theme as EPE seems to be able to use it whenever they want.
My best guess is either Guercio's orchestra re-arranged it and cut it, or since they were on tour so much in '72, it may be more likely that MGM had their own studio orchestra cut a re-arranged version of it.
The only place it seems to exist is on the soundtrack of the film.

According Joseph A. Tunzi in his book "Elvis The Documentaries: That´s The Way It Is & Elvis On Tour" (2005, page 126) explains:

"In the film Elvis on Tour, the 2001 theme used as Elvis entered onto the stage was replaced with music resembling "Also Sprach Zarathustra." The audio was re-recorded in the recording studio and inserted in the film because, it is believed, the original MGM movie 2001, A Space Odyssey had an exclusive clause prohibiting the use of this theme in any other film. Thus, the substitution avoided both the copyright problem and MGM competing with their own films."

This theme was recorded in a overdub sessions for the film on October 20th, 1972, at Annex Sound Studio, Hollywood, CA, under the name "2001 alternate". The engineer was Dick Perissi and MGM producer was Robert Abel.

BTW the original 2001 could not be used for any other film release for 10 years.
