Something Else, Syndicated variety TV series 1970-1971 (volume 2 of 3)
I downloaded these three volumes containing episodes of a TV series I had never heard of before via torrent. Because the information included with torrent seemed a little incomplete and inaccurate (the info with the torrent said the show aired in the late seventies yet the musical performers were clearly from the early seventies) I searched the internet and found little information about the series. So as I recently decided to pull these off my hard drive and burn them to disc I decided to do a new search and still found little information. Searches were further complicated by the fact that there was a BBC TV series for children in the late seventies with the same name. Here's what little info I have been able to dig up.
Something Else was a syndicated variety show officially hosted by comedian John Byner (with musician John Hartford as alternate host on apparently half the episodes). There was a group of dancers (the Action Faction Dancers) who are featured in practically every episode. Each episode was filmed in different locales (which would explain the need for two hosts since they were probably filming the next episode while finishing the current episode and one host couldn't be in two places). The musical artists varied from episode to episode and came from all musical genres.
I did manage to find an apparently complete list of episodes at this site:
https://sites.google.com/site/vintagerocktv/usa/something-else
According to that list there were only 34 episodes ever made for the series.
These DVDs were transfered from a high gen VHS and the quality is far from perfect. The master VHS was transfered from the masters sent out to TV stations as many of the episodes contain the cues for local commercials as well as timing codes for the start of the episode. Some of the episodes seem incomplete as evidenced by the variation in duration for each episode and as the list linked above suggest some songs that don't appear on these DVDs.
Even with these caveats, this is still a worthwhile collection. This was obviously a fascinating TV series and presents a time capsule to the early seventies music scene. It includes performances from artists whose careers were so brief there is probably no other video performances available (The Mephistopheles is a prime example). It also includes video from more established artists that collectors may not have previously been aware of. The menus on each DVD provide buttons to play the entire disc, play each episode in its entirety or jump to individual songs.
There are no standard DVD covers for these discs but I have included inserts for slimline CD cases with corrected info about each episode. (I use slimline CD cases for my collection merely as a space saver. I prefer this to paper sleeves since the insert makes searching for a particular DVD easier and allows for basic information like track selection to be readily available.)
