Ive never used this feature....what are the advantages.....why should i use it?...how do you use it?....your help would be soooooo appreciated..thanks

it's used for sticking in effects pedals etc. instead of putting them in between the guitar and amp
people use it because it apparantely reduces any background noise/hum and overall improving the effect - this is because the electronic signal is far stronger than just putting it between the guitar and amp, and you need less lead length
it oughta be pretty effective considering they spent money putting it in

the effect loop normally is after the preamp. It sends a signal only to the power section of the amp avoiding any unwanted gain and colorations. The one pictured i would asssume by the controls is a parallel loop allowing control of the send and return signals. This lets you mix how much of the loop signal is mixed with the original signal being sent through the amp. This is sending a preamped signal out to your loop through whatever device in the loop and back to the power section of the amp while at the same time sending the original non processed signal through amp.
A normal set up is Guitar > wah> input of amp> loop send > effects(processor)>loop return.

wow.... thanks guitaristic and Vintage Brat....your clear explanations have enlighten me...so i can just plug directly into my amp and have all the fx going through the loop with a cleaner and purer effect being its after the preamp...i think i got it...very cool...thanks again..you guys rule :thumb
If I remember right Stig, the 5150II is a series loop only. relying on the level of whatever is in the loop to set the value of the signal. The ones with a volume or level control are the parallel loop that allows for adjustment of the mix.If your processor or whatever you have in the loop has an active real time expression pedal.(volume pedal) you can control the overall signal with that.

Interesting conversation here guys. I'm also new to using the effects loop, so I'm taking note to what you guys are saying. I'm running my V-amp pro thru the effects loop, but I don't really care for the flange and phaser in the unit. So I'm planning on running my Boss Flange, and MXR Phase thru the loop as well, but wasn't sure how I should set it up. Since the V-amp is already in the loop, should I just put the Flange and Phaser in front of it, and continue to plug my guitar straight into the V-amp and play?
Chris , I would try it both ways, with the flange and phase before and after the V-AMP. if your using the V-AMP 's gain or distortion fx I would put the phase and flange after to keep a truer signal. Usually a distorted phased and or flanged signal is a bit odd sounding. where as a phased and or flanged distorted signal is more pleasing.

Guitar--> volume-->wha--> distortion or preamp-->[amp]-->
[fx send] -->flange-->phase--> (chorus, harmonizer,doubler)-->delay --> [fx return].
In your case Chris where your using only the power amp section of your amp.
Guitar--> VAMP--> flange--> phase--> fx return.
You can remove any of those you dont use or need . This isnt written in stone its just what is considered common

I wish I had better luck with the effects loop on my Crate 120w stack. I tried running my pedals, chorus, delay, & noise gate through it and oh my god the hum was worse than it is just going between my guitar and amp! What could I be doing wrong? The instruction book for my crate told me which way to hook it up but it sounded terrible.

Riff, if you aren't using your effects with batteries, try that. Sometimes a poorly filtered wall wart will cause nasty hum. If that doesn't help, try one effect at a time to see if one is causing the noise. also try different patch cables.Riff Addict said:

Try with batteries? Ok, I use AC adapters because batteries have such a short life span in pedals. I never thought of hooking up one pedal at a time to rule out one that could be causing the hum...thanks for the advice.Mr Crumb said:
