Well , he starts with a guitar and an amp

He runs a cord from the guitar to a few small boxes and a really big box with a bunch of lights....from that to the input of the amp.

That's about as much as most of us understand of his set-up and settings

The rest comes from somewhere else.

As for as the album sound..take all of the above and get yourself a recording studio board and very skilled engineer...done

Create a slight midrange hump using an EQ is your guitar doesn't have enough on it's own. Use a Delay with a short slap-back with one repeat. Phase 90 pedal set at 9am, EVH Flanger with EVH button engaged, plate reverb through the FX loop. That's the basic 1st LP tone. Only use the Flanger/Phase when needed

you won't copy Edward's sound cause it's in his hands.. You could have his original amp/gear right infront of you from the first album and you still won' sound like him.. This is what alot of inexperienced players fail to realize.. The style, technique of a player is what really gives them their sound.. It's kind of like how everybody has their own voice, everybody sounds like themselves..

I would have to agree 100%. An interesting thing is that most people think that Ed's old Plexi was this ultra high gain head, but the truth is it was very clean but had tons of punch and balls to it.. He dug into his strings so hard to get that cool overdriven tone that people think it was high gain. The early Van Halen demos are a great example of just how clean Eddie's Marshall was.
