41 years ago today Sinatra was in the middle of a week-long engagement in Fort Lauderdale, FL at the Sunrise Musical Theater. You can still go there today but not for a concert--it's now the home of Faith Center Ministries.

With this show we have a rare opportunity to hear Sinatra perform "S'Wonderful," a song he never recorded. He performed it on the radio just a few times, and the only times it appeared in his concerts was during March, April, and May of 1981.

We stay in Fort Lauderdale for a second straight concert, from Sinatra's engagement in 1981. It's a different set list from his show the previous night, but still with the rare performance of "S'Wonderful."

A bit of Sinatra history with this concert--we get the pleasure of hearing the first time Sinatra performed "I Loved Her." A few months later on July 21 he would record it for his next album, "She Shot Me Down."

Nice sound, with Vincent Falcone, Jr. on the podium.

Two notes with this one. First, we miss the very start of "I've Got The World On A String." Second, at the start of the track for "Send In The Clowns" we get the beginning of a Tony Mottola guitar solo; the recording cuts off and then picks back up with the start of "Send In The Clowns."

Today I'm posting two separate Sinatra entries, separated by 32 years. I'll present them in chronological order.

1949-05-03
Command Performance (radio show)

The Armed Forces Radio Network program "Command Performance" wrapped up in 1949, and here we have Sinatra's final appearance on the program--Episode 375 which was broadcast on May 3, 1949 (we don't know the recording date). Gloria DeHaven was the host, and with Sinatra on this program was The Phil Moore Four and June Foray.

"Bop Goes My Heart" was written by Phil Moore, who accompanies Sinatra on this performance. Sinatra had recorded it a few months before this show--in December 1948, with The Phil Moore Four. Here we get a bit of scat singing from Sinatra.

In a skit called "Boy Detective Sam Sinatra" Sinatra stars as Sam Sinatra and is joined by Gloria DeHaven, announcer Marvin Miller, and June Foray.

Sinatra had recorded "When Is Sometime?" in December 1947. It's from the 1948 film "A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court." I'm not aware of him having performed it other than on this broadcast.

Phil Moore was a jazz piano player, music arranger, and big band leader. He worked in Hollywood on many film scores but seldom received credit because of his race. In the late 1940s he was touring with a group called The Phil Moore Four--who we hear on this broadcast.

Gloria DeHaven was an actress and singer. She had been on Sinatra's radio program "Songs By Sinatra" on May 1, 1946.

Another show from the Sunrise Musical Theater in Fort Lauderdale, FL, back in 1981 on this date. This was his final performance of this engagement.

Sinatra mentions he's singing from the written lyrics for "S'Wonderful" because he doesn't know the words, and then begins singing "Too Marvelous For Words." Not sure if he's joking or he was so unfamiliar with the words that he accidentally started the wrong song.

In this setlist we get the medley of "The Gal That Got Away / It Never Entered My Mind" that Sinatra had been performing live since 1978. This is the first time he had sung it since he had recorded it almost a month earlier on April 8, for his upcoming album "She Shot Me Down."

The recording I have is split up in two parts, each of which you can burn to a CD.

Today we'll dip back into the 60s--1968 to be precise--for a Sinatra show at the Fontainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. He'd been in Miami for much of the first few months of 1968 filming "Lady In Cement," and had performed at this hotel nightly from early March through early April.

The sound is decent, and the orchestra was conducted by Bill Miller.

Your Hit Parade (radio show)

Today we dip back to some of the earliest Sinatra you'll hear--when he hosted the famous "Your Hit Parade" (YHP) radio program. Sponsored by Lucky Strike cigarettes and airing on Saturday nights, it aired on the radio from 1935 to 1953. The format was a countdown of the top songs in the nation that week, with various singers performing the various tunes.

Sinatra contributed to YHP in two stretches, first in 1943 – 1944 and then again during 1947 – 1949. During Sinatra’s time on YHP he became increasingly frustrated with the quality of songs he was given to sing which eventually led to him moving away from YHP and over to his own program, “Light Up Time” (also sponsored by Lucky Strike cigarettes). Probably moreso than any other radio program he did, on YHP you get the chance to hear Sinatra sing songs he never recorded.

Here we have a show from Sinatra's first run with YHP, from this date 78 years ago in 1944. Joining Sinatra on this broadcast was Joan Edwards and The Hit Paraders. Sinatra sang three numbers on this one:

Poinciana
I'll Be Seeing You
I Love You

Sinatra would record "Poinciana" twice in his career--first in 1946 and then again in 1947. He sang it a few times on YHP and then in 1950 on "Light Up Time."

Sinatra sang a few different songs called "I Love You"--this one is the one written by Cole Porter. He recorded it on his "Sinatra and Swingin' Brass" album in 1962. This was the first time he sang it on the radio and he would perform it on several other programs over the next few months.

"I'll Be Seeing You" is a song Sinatra turned to throughout much of his career. He first recorded it in 1940 with Tommy Dorsey and then again in 1961 (for his tribute album to Tommy Dorsey) and then again later that year with a completely different arrangement for the "Point Of No Return" album. He only sang it twice in concerts though, both times in the early 1960s.

52 years ago, from May 4-8, Sinatra played London's Royal Festival Hall with the Count Basie Orchestra and a British string section. Below is the show from May 7, 1970.

There's a unique treat with this concert--it's the first of just two times Sinatra performed "Lady Day" live. Originally recorded for the "Watertown" album in August 1969 ("Lady Day" was the woman who left the protagonist in that album's story), Sinatra decided to leave it off the album when it was released. He returned to it with a Don Costa arrangement in November 1969, re-interpreting it as a tribute to one of his favorite singers, Billie Holiday (who was known as "Lady Day"). It's this latter arrangement we hear in this concert, and Sinatra even introduces it as a tribute to Holiday.

The sound is okay, and Bill Miller is on the podium conducting.

Today we head to Canada for a concert Sinatra performed 47 years ago on this date. Excellent soundboard quality with this one, and Don Costa has the baton.

A nice treat with this show is Sinatra's performance of "Cycles." Originally on his album of the same title back in 1968, he performed it live off and on in 1968 and 1969, after which it disappeared from his set lists. However, in the spring of 1975 it appeared again and he sang it through August of that year--and never again. So, with this show we have a fairly rare performance of this song.

In 1984 Sinatra played the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago, IL from May 8 through May 12. Here's the show from May 11.

Less than a month after recording tracks for his upcoming album "L.A. Is My Lady," here we hear Sinatra perform four of those songs in this concert: "The Best Of Everything," "It's All Right With Me," "L.A. Is My Lady," and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing?" Interestingly, Sinatra refers to the album as "The Best Of Everything."

The sound quality is excellent with this one. Joe Parnello is conducting the orchestra.

Frank Sinatra Timex Special (TV show)

If you tuned into ABC at 9:30 PM EST on Thursday, May 12, 1960 (62 years ago) you would've been fortunate enough to see musical history--Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra singing together (the show had actually been taped back on March 26). Presley was returning from the army to America and, to generate some interest in both him and Sinatra's TV program, it was decided that the two should appear on stage together.

They sang a duet medley of "Witchcraft" and "Love Me Tender."

The duet appears on a CD called "The ABC-TV Sessions", which I'm posting it below. You also get songs from several other TV appearances from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and one from I think the 1990s--the "New York, New York" at the end I think is from one of Sinatra's last appearances on TV in the 1990s, with dozens of stars singing the song onstage to honor him (I don't remember the exact show).

Today we're going to begin a streak of a few days in a row of Sinatra's engagement at the Sabre Room in Hickory Hills, IL back in 1976. Here we've got the second show from 46 years ago tonight.

Closed as of 2016, the Sabre Room was a 2500-person banquet hall on the south side of Chicago.

Here we get a fairly rare performance of "All By Myself" which had been released by Eric Carmen earlier this year. We heard Sinatra's first performance of it from the Westchester Theater in Tarrytown, NY back in early April; Sinatra performed it into the summer of 1976 and that was it--he never recorded it.

Excellent soundboard quality with this show, and Bill Miller is at the podium.
