GENESIS
Midsummer Night
Knebworth Festival, 24th June 1978
London Wavelength "The BBC Rock Hour" [show #35, 03.Sep.78; show #36, 10.Sep.78 - 2 reels] x 2 and London Wavelength "Best of the BBC Rock Hour" [show #304-A, 24.Jan.82 - LP] and BBC "In Concert" [show #180, CN3146, 1978 - LP]
Previously unreleased sources assembled in a continuous mix without hiss, noise, static, mechanical artifacts or advertisements using modern mastering techniques.
Excerpts from David Dunnington at his indispensable compendium, "The Complete Guide to Live Genesis Radio Shows:"
In 1978 Genesis headlined the annual Knebworth Festival, their sole UK date on the "Mirrors" tour. The BBC recorded the show on the Island Record mobile studio and the BBC master of this initial broadcast was a 90 minute edit of the show on reel-to-reel tape soon after the concert. The full 90 minutes as re-broadcast by the BBC were later featured over a two issue special BBC Rock Hour program distributed on reels and aired on the first two Sundays of September 1978. These reels are among the rarest of Genesis live radio shows and a sampling of multiple copies in a “best-of-breed” are offered in this release. Later compilation shows of Knebworth 1978 on the BBC Rock Hour were distributed in LP form having two distinct variations. The second variation of the "Best of the BBC Rock Hour" was initially broadcast at the end of January 1981 and re-aired in January 1982 as “Version A” which was initially digitized to serve as the bulk of this release.
What started out as a simple transfer of the lone LP using the latest analog to digital conversion soon turned into a massive side project. Since the LP transfer exceeded expectations, a search was on to find the best available tracks that didn’t make it onto vinyl in any incarnation. Enter Alessandro Vasserot (aka AV), a GRaSP member and well-known collector of Genesis who has versions and releases that are not available in the wild. Back in the day, the GRaSP team expended many resources to “archive and preserve radio shows, making faithful, unedited digital tranfers of radio show media.” They assembled quite the collection over the years and when getting a glimpse inside the vaults it was akin to a kid running amok in a candy store. There was so much excellent Knebworth material that the album transfer was abandoned save for a few bits. And now, and now, it’s time to put some of those gems into circulation so the broader Genesis community can access more Knebworth content that could’ve been part of the BBC Broadcasts box set in an alternate non-Banksian universe.
All reel-to-reel digital transfers were expertly produced years ago. Some had more hiss and noise than others and a few reels had some speed issues, but overall the sound quality was amazing. Minimal hiss reduction was applied in some areas and noisy sections on previous releases - especially during the quiet parts - have been replaced with pristine sources. There was surgical removal of mechanical noises that only occur when Phil speaks; phase correction was applied, as was “frequency leveling” between channels on one of the reels. Finally, all narrator introductions and commercials were removed and audience cheers were cross-faded for a seamless concert experience.
The enormity and atmosphere of this show is captured quite well on this recording. The band sounds a little distant but still creates an overwhelming presence and must’ve been a sight and sound to behold.
