I'm starting a new project with a drummer that is a huge fan of dream theater and would like to cover some of they're stuff. Having never really listened to them before, I bought a few DVD's to get familiar with them...So I am gonna learn some ... right.....HOLY $#@&!! This guy is insane....I know there are already many fans on here, this post is just to let you know there is now one more.

What songs are you going to cover? Personally, if I started a new band and the first thing that someone suggested me to learn was DT, I'd do this to them. :stick:
Actually, there are a bunch of DT tunes that aren't insane for guitar. Sounds like a fun project. My favorite DT cd at the moment is Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

dream theater help

Well ac, maybe you can help me out here. You sound like you might be pretty familiar with them. I have started out with "under a glass moon" , based on my 1 weeks worth of DT knowledge, seemed like it might be one of a dream theater fans more popular songs..and it's the opening song on one of the dvd's I picked up. But, dont get me wrong, I want something that is gonna challenge the hellouta me on the guitar..This drummer (who is exceptional by the way... samvh on youtube if ya care to check him out) but, he does prefer the newer DT stuff.. maybe you could suggest a newer song with not so much emphasis on keyboards. Do they have a newer song that is strictly an instrumental? What our long range plan is to throw some different stuff like DT in here and there, do some original stuff, and play mostly some more mainstream stuff ranging from Santana to GNR. I'm already in a band, a shift work job and large family so time to sift through so much DT stuff is my problem. I need to pick one DT song and then spend 27 weeks learning it.........

Sorry I missed your reply. Their new cd "Systematic Chaos" doesn't have such a strong keyboard presence. That's because Jordan Rudess is basically doing the same riffs as Petrucci with a sound that's similar. No instrumentals though. Check out Liquid Tension Experiment for those.

Basically, LTE is Dream Theater without vocals and John Myung. Tony Levin does the bass. This was a project that Petrucci and Portnoy did with Jordan Rudess before Rudess joined DT. Here's a sample.

I guess you guys have a pretty good bassist?

Liquid tension experiment

Actually, the drummer did mention LTE to me, checked out one song so far. And, no, at the moment we have no Bass player, and that was one of my comments when I first started watching these DVD's is I have NEVER seen a Bass player that could play like that. Probably because I've never seen a band which required the Bass player to play like that. I did post a little help wanted in the lounge which references my myspace for more details on our little project. (the myspace link is below)

Just listen to the solo he does on "Constant Motion". That is probably one of the most innovative, and phenomenal solos I've heard in a LONG time!
He is by far one of my ALL time favorite guitarists!
I've put up some links for you so you can see and hear this solo man. The first three are just live clips of him playing the solo. Where as the last video is the full song. The 3rd one is kinda choppy, and isn't the full solo.
The final video is the actual FULL "Constant Motion" video. I hate the video because it cuts out good parts to the song and inverts it right into the solo. It totally surpasses the interlude and even cuts out the best part of the solo. You'll hear the interlude in the first video! The 2nd video has the best sound and visual quality.
