The Ultimate shredder: Malmsteen (he started it all)

The best on acoustic: Al Dimeola

The most unusual: Stevie Vai (he started it too) and his teacher Satriani

The guitar gymnist: Michael Angelo Batio (I think so.. btw, what's a gymnist?)

Best sense of melody: This is a hard one but I'd go for Gary Moore (earlier works) and also that Europe guitarist after John Norum left, Kee Marcello.

I'm gonna go way off the beaten path with some guys that are unsung, but what they have accomplished is insane.

The Ultimate shredder:

There's several here, but this guy is one of a new breed extreme player.

Fabrizio Leo
Listen to "Yeah Vinnie" for starters.

The best on acoustic:

Micheal Hedges comes to mind, but Lenny Breau invented so much that guys like Tommy Emmanuel borrow from.

Lenny Breau... R. I. P. :(

The most unusual:

Eric Glass....

Easily the best guitarist you've never heard of.

Check out "Two Rivers", and "Frozen" for some unusual sense of melody, timing, technique, and composition.

The guitar gymnast:

Guthrie Govan, or Ron Thal for starters

Here's Guthrie:

At around 2 minutes in this vid, he just loses me completely. How he stayed clean is beyond comprehension.

Best sense of melody:

Scott Henderson. Ungodly good player.

A bass, and one guitar... He fills so much space and does so much with so little it's unbelievable.

And here's a killer lesson from him on melodic phrasing.

There's so many guys that should be though of that cross several of the parameters here, guys like Alan Holdsworth, (unusual, gymnastics, and melody) Greg Howe (shred, gymnastics) And all the guys others have mentioned above, like Vai, Satch, Malmsteen, Lukather, and so on that the list is endless.

Great thread!

Thanks Joe, this will definitely give me some new material to check out, great links!

I have heard guthrie quite a few times through the guitar techniques magazine,Im quite the fan of his, I used to be a regular collector, but the mag price here is just too much to pay for. Dave Kilmister(sp?) was also another great guitarist!:icon_head
