Hi Guys and Gals,
Posting another version of FTLOG by Vai for your critique. I got back to this one after a break from it (well, trying to get the end bits clean - er).
The guitar sits a bit to low in the mix at the moment, I got a bit carried away with trying to make it fit with the backing, but I hope it doesn't ruin it.
I'm really interested in getting some feedback as I haven't copied the song exactly and would love to know what you guys think of this interpretation - I'm having a crack at "Tears of the Sahara" now and it seems a lot more difficult - any practice tips gratefully recieved!

Oh yeah, link....

Thanks for the kind words, I'm pleased you like it. I didn't realise there were so many versions of FTLOG on this forum, thanks for taking the time to look at this one.
I agree completely that there's too much reverb and delay, but it does cover alot of mistakes....... ;-)
My old guitar teacher would be cursing right now, he always used to say "lead guitar should be loud! Turn it up!!!".

...and the mp3 compression doesn't help much either.
Yip! same as doing a mix down in the studio. When you think you have got the perfect mix with all the fx sounding lush and balanced you burn it to disc only to find it is suddenly overpowered by fx and compressed to hell. It's all trial and error mate.

Good job with this, FTLOG is a great track and I never really tire of hearing reworkings of it :thumb:

Yeah, great playing on this. Full of Vai-tronics and for the main part as close as hell. Did anyone mention the reverb was a bit full-on? Oh yeah!

Let's hear more from ya..."you've got charasma!!" (old DLR quote) :icon_thum

Wow!
Thanks guys, still working on the repost ("Now with low-fat reverb....."), but after this thread I've got a new enthusiasm to get it as good as I can.

Tell me about it!!!
Luckily most of the reverb and eq'ing is done in Sonar (I recorded DI with an RG550 through a GNX1), so theoretically it should be easy to tweak. Having said that, it seems that if I change anything, the mix turns crappy. I'll just play with it for a few hours (probably taken about 12 hours on this version so far.....).

Edit: New link posted on first post - now with less reverb and louder leads. Enjoy!!! :jam:
