It works the same way as the pentatonic ,

the chord most of the time does = the key . . most likely your playing the right scale but not phrasing it right so it sounds weird .

as daunting as it is .. transcribe some yngwie solo's or copy some from some tab it'll give you some little licks to use to get you started on how it fits in better :thumb:

i was playing around with the harmonic minor for a while until i figured out the expanse of chords it contains. for example in A harmonic you got: am, amadd9, ammaj7, dm, dmadd9, dm7, ddim, E, E7, F, Fmaj7, Fm, Fmmaj7... etc. its alot to mess around with

it is also worth noting that the Harmonic Minor scale has "modes" or scales for each tone just as the traditional major scale (ionian, dorian, etc) does. Yngwie often plays off of the 6th mode of harmonic minor that give a phrygian feel with a triton between the 2nd and 3rd of the scale. Take E harmonic minor, play it over an E5 pedal. Now play it over a B5 pedal. Sounds different.
