Same answer as ever my friend. Go down to a good store, fire up all the under $1000 amps and pick what you want from sound, features, build and price. I'd personally pick something that was versatile...great clean sound, great effects and effect routing, superb gain and frr upgrades via the net. It would prolly be a Line6 Vetta II combo.
A used Mesa Mark IV. It's my favorite amp I've had so far and I've owned amps by Bogner, Soldano, CAA, VHT, Splawn, Engl, Marshall and other Boogies. Take some time with it to see how the controls interact with eachother (not an amp you can just spend 10 minutes at the music store with) and you'll be loving it.
