mrs rad and i were at the revelatory 30th anniversary performances around patti's curation of meltdown at the south bank in 2005 and at the more ramshackle 40th performances in 2015 and you start to wonder at the wisdom of Doing it all once more until it starts... and then you wonder why she ever does anything else there are several peak moments during tonight's show but on 'birdland' in particular, you really are up, up, up in the belly of the ship and you wouldn't be anywhere else the 'shaman' tag gets thrown around a lot and unless you're william burroughs, maybe it isn't for you to judge but is there another performer who can whip you up into such a wild-eyed fugue state? as her hands press the air and she implores you to join her, you know, even in your trance, that you are in the presence of something transformative, electric and (clearly) indescribable patti smith will be 79 in december can we hope for a 60th anniversary performance? if so, let the ship slide open and we'll go inside of it enjoy
