Apart from the obvious risk of scratching the thing, is there any significance to the absence of a pickguard? I bought a Les Paul and it happened to have no pickguard but that's OK - I've seen a few like that. I was also interested in a G&L S500 but oddly that didn't have a pickguard either. And every S500 I've seen has a Strat-like pickguard.

Lots of guitars dont have pickgaurds as nearly all picks these days are way to soft to damage the body. None of my jacksons have pickgaurds and i use a fairly heavy gauge pick and no damage to be seen.unless you use a coin as a pick which some blues players used to.
