i have properly selected the source so that isn't the problem. what could possibly be the issue?

I've also sometimes used SB live with Sonar, which is a Cakewalk product. Are you certain you have selected the right source both from the Creatives mixer software and from the track in Cakewalk you are recording to? And also from Cakewalks audio options? My guess is that you've missed some of these.
How about the volume slider in the mixer?
