after i bought and heared passion and warfare i became a vai fan once more. he really redefines the meaning of guitar playing! no longer is guitar playing just notes..his guitar comes alive becoming a creature with its own behavior, temper, moods its just pure amazing. ok before u start flaming me for previous negative events..i have already apologised in the old forum countless times.

Passion & Warfare, for me is THE Vai album. It is just about perfect and every song offers something. I don't think he has come close to matching this album even though all his other stuff is pretty extraordinary too.

well im in agreement once more . this time with phil . passion and warfare is perfect . the zappa freaks who love the frank in vai will probably go more for flex-able or fire garden or even ultra zone . but passion and warfare coveres the most ground in my honest opinion . Vai is kinda a legend .. if not now .. then he will be soon enough . he came flying out of the whole 80's thing and managed to keep up to date without conforming to commerciality . hes Vai .. and it seems alot of people respect and love him for it . i know i do . true master of guitar and true genius of creativity . all hail Mr Vai lol:bowdown:

You're right. The compositions off of Flexable and Fire Garden are my favorite Vai tunes. To me, they are what covers the most ground :p. So, as an abnormality of a Vai fan, I hereby proclaim that I don't think passion and warfare is his jem. If i really had to choose, it'd hands down be fire garden. It takes you on a journey.

i duno wat it is about vai.. i like some of his stuff, but his whole artistic sense, i don't like. i'm more rock n roll at heart. i play some vai stuff, listen to some, and get a good aural sensation, but he just isn't rockin' n rolling, when compared to satch. i enjoy playing the billion notes per hour vai stuff, but i prefer to play rock n roll, no matter how basic. and i admit, i prefer satch to vai.:jam: :jam:

Lets not forget that Vai got his first lessons from Satch and who's to say that Vai would be the guitar virtuoso that he is without Satch's input and later Frank Zappa's. Vai would be the first to acknowledge the debt he owes to those two awesome musicians.
Lets also not forget that Vai got Joe signed to Relativity Records by playing Joe's (self-financed) Not of This Earth album to Relativity boss Cliff Cultreri and recommending he take Joe on board....................... the rest is history.
I am one of the Zappa freaks that DannyBoy refers to and I love Flex-Able, "Call It Sleep" is my favourite Vai track ever............... but I am in agreement that "Passion and Warfare" is the most "complete" Vai album in the catalogue and as DannyBoy alludes to Vai surely is a legend in my book as well as his.

Yea but most Vai fans have realized that the student has long since surpassed the teacher :). P.S. Im one of those Zappa Freaks too.

Me personally, i prefer Steve over Joe. I think Joe can pull off bluesy hard rock alot better than Steve. My favourite song by Joe is 'big bad moon'. Hearing those over the top solos on a pretty standard boogie backing is awesome  Have Joe and Steve ever collaborated on studio tracks together?

not guitar fans can sit back and listen to satch, his music creation is brilliant. he's unique.. he brings bluesy rock n roll, into excellent instrumental guitar playing. he creates beautiful melodies, and adds in soul overtaking solo's that i love, and love to play.

personally, wen i'm giggin', and doing 'for the love of god' or any vai song, i enjoy it as i enjoy playing, and that's vai's bestt song for me. it has the most passion.. but to the point, wen giggin, or jammin, i always prefer to play, the likes of summer song, extremist, surfin', circles, potato head groove, etc. than any vai song. i guess vai, just seems like another tutored geek, just like petrucci, michael angelo etc.

it ain't wat u can do, it's how u do it. satch portrays everything excellently, and i've never seen satch make mistakes, can't say that for vai. vai's style, he uses basic tricks, but due to his physical appearance, and performance, and overacting, makes it all look like a spectacular show. but wen u know those tricks inside out, it just makes me laugh..

my top 5 guitarists, who are all self taught, and who i believe are better than vai :

ed van halen
john sykes
satch
brian setzer
mark knopfler...

btw, danny gatton wud blow vai off stage. although i have somewhat, some sorta like for vai... i like his guitar and amps.

I hate it when someone says X is better than Y. It's a silly argument. What is better anyway? I'm a massive vai fan but I don't think he is better than anyone else, just different. Every guitarist that has been mentioned on this thread is cool in their own way and I bet if they were put in a room together they could show each other something new and different. How old are you peavey04wolfgang? You sound rather bitter about Vai's success and feel justified attacking his playing. Let's face it, Vai has stood the test of time and is still going strong and quite frankly doesn't care about blowing anyone off stage.

i am 16,

and i might sound bitter, as i'm passionate about guitar. and i hate the way guys like u fuss over vai, wenever vai is overrated, and shudnt be fussed over by ppl like u. as u said, u cud teach vai a thing or two, how come u wudnt get talked about as much? vai, is always stuck in my face, my friends always argue, how he's best since hendrix, which makes me laugh. if satch didn't teach vai, i bet vai wudnt be where he is, although vai, gets more credit, and IMO, satch is a better guitarist, also his teacher, his biggest inspiration. i guess i'm a little jealous of vai, but aren't we all? we all wana be on that stage, on the front of guitar magazines, and rockin' every venue around the world and gettin paid millions, just for doing something u love. i'll be there one day, wait and see:icon_thum

I never said I could teach Vai a thing or 2. I also don't fuss over him. Yeah I like his stuff but I have a lot of fave guitar players and depending what mood I'm in i'll change my fave player. At the moment it's paul gilbert.

Also I don't think Satriani made Vai a great guitar player, but Vai made himself a good guitar player. I rarely hear any of joe's style in his playing but I do hear a lot of Zappa. Not that i'm dissing Satriani as I think he too is awesome

and i've never seen satch make mistakes, can't say that for vai.
Well Joe does make mistakes and yes Vai does make mistakes. But that's because everybody makes mistakes at some point.

Also what exactly does Vai get more credit for?

Yea Satch taught Vai for a while, but i'm sorry I think Zappa taught and challenged him a hell of a lot more, and the influence is much more there. The student has surpassed the teacher (satch) *cough*. "and i've never seen satch make mistakes, can't say that for vai." I don't what this guy's talking about here. Have you been paying close enough attention to the music?
Peavy, it's fine that you dont like Vai, but why go on a VAI FORUM and tell everyone? Obviously you're just barking up the wrong tree and everyone is going to disagree with you, so why try? The comments are futile. Anyone that comes to this Vai section most likely loves him, and agrees with me that he is not only a great guitarist, but a great composer and an extremely creative and vibrant individual. I wish i could say the same for Satch, but the more I go back to him the more he just bores me in comparison. Sorry.

lol . simple licks ? yeah .. right .. sure :) ... Vai surpassed satch long ago . satch was like the first step for Vai .. but hes taken thousands more steps since those days . frank was alot more instrumental in creating the vai we all know than satch was . and i tell you why satch doesnt mess up as much . its cause he stands still the entire show . vai is always dancing around ... you try playing vai songs while prancing around like a lunatic and waving at the crowd mid solo . :) . you cant .. you little dummy . go and take your satch worship to the satriani part . this is for vai fans only :) . but you are 16 ... maybe i should go easy ... theres still time for you to wake up lol . i could go on and on about how i think vai is better than satch and i could prove it over n over with many different theories and facts . but when all comes to all . its preference . if you prefer satch thats fine . but dont put vai down in a vai sub forum just because you wish you could play like him and wish you were worshipped like he is ... and now i think of it . vai is the best since hendrix . i admit plenty guys can outplay vai . but they dont have his charisma .. his stage presence . his showmanship . his exceptional ear for music that nobody else on the planet has the ear for ... and its beautiful music .. its crazy music .. its wild . its energetic . its poetic ... vai's entire being to me is the modern version of hendrix ... there are better players ... but none of them were hendrix .. and none of them are vai . :) .. right phil ?

Then you must live in a pretty enclosed world ;)....there are lots of players out there......and there is no "best"..people are different and play in their own way.
Just because they are unknow does not mean that they are bad players...or any less unimaginative, just unknown to the larger public around the world.
Vai is not alone:mix:
He is a quite complete musician for sure...but hardly all that unique when it comes down to it, he is just more famous and has alot of image juju going on:smirk::icon_thum
And I am not dissing him by any means , to me he is just one of many great players....they all make my world a better one with their great playing!
