Of cource you have tried changing the midi in & midi out leads? I remember there were some twisted logic in them. I had a V-Amp 2 connected to SB Live and didn't get them to negotiate at first place. Then when I connected the leads like they should all worked fine.
I recall the line from V-Amps midi in should go to Midi out in the sound card - or vice versa. Try changing them if you already hadn't.
