Vai has always done what he wanted to do which is create his own music. He basically used these bands as vehicles for generating cash to fund his album 'Passion & Warfare'. He also knew that doing the Whitesnake gig would be a great thing to do as it would get him known and throughout the Whitesnake tour he as able to showcase his stuff.
