I did a retake of this: did some parts better and others worse but, I played the main riff at the end slowly so those who are interested can hear how I think Ed played it. Its a very simple yet powerful riff but, It took me years to finally get it right. I used to hammer the E to G notes of the riff (on the D string), but discovered it is actually the E (on the D string) to the open G string. -of course these notes are to be pinched. Note the open low E tucked in there, that makes the whole thing work!

Another thing that makes Ed's playing so relaxed and natural sounding are those little slides he slips in between various maneuvers. -they are coolly tucked in everywhere in this tune!

I feel (at the time an perhaps even now) that this is one of the most unconventional guitar based songs to have come along. For one, there is that strange clicking harmonic riff and then the incorporation of the Flanger (this was absolutely unheard of before Ed) and last of all, that total powerhouse, lurching rhythmic "solo" break in the middle. I don't claim this to be "fine" guitar playing, but it is something much deeper, primitive and earthy. I adore it!:D

Thanks guys! I kinda like the tone too but yes, a little more stinging high end would be cool. The foot switch seems to be malfunctioning on my old mxr flanger so I left it out even though it should be highlighted in this tune. I always have such difficulty with timing in this tune though, it seems like it should be easy. Anybody have a better backing track for this? I adore that lurching rhythmic break in the middle of this song. To me it is one of the most fascinating and powerful things Ed ever came up with.

Awesome VH cover (didnt expect anything less than awesome though:D ). Good to see that your injured finger doesnt really seem to hold you back. :thumb:
Hey, thanks for remembering! Damn ring finger has pins and needles sensations so I guess the nerves are slowly coming back. It works but, has made my playing a little sloppy when it comes to certain maneuvers.

Holy Crap, Strat! Great chops bro! The tone sounds great to me... Just curious, what setting are you using on your POD?
Thanks Raven! Its the Eruption setting with the 4 X12 Recto cabinets setting instead of the Greenbacks. I also used the 421 Dynamic mic instead of the sm-57 setting.

Thanks VanMan and Top Jimmy. I like the raw feel of the tone on this clip but it gets floppy and unassertive on the low notes. I love how gutsy and articulate Eds sound is on the original. That "shark" guitar was a magic piece of wood for sure.

I was hoping that this post would go away but, decided to give it another go. I love this song and wanted to get it right. Still messed up some parts but did better on other part. I wrote a better description of the main riff at the beginning of this post for those who are interested. It's such a simple tune but, sounds so incredible to me. That counter point lurching rhythm thing in the middle is very difficult.
Oh, this was a PODxt.:jot:

Thanks flyingv. I like the tone too, I just wish I could get some real ballsy character out of the low E string. With these PODs you can get some sick ass tone but, to get that real big, worm and articulate tone, I guess you need the real thing.
