A vocal version with a more close SRV style this time...got round to jamming along with the song for an hour or so and managed to pick up some of his signature licks.

Excellent work, Chris. The recording is very good quality and the playing and singing is superb, man. Love the tone you laid down on the git. You captured the SRV vibe on this in spades. Love the wahwah...sounds great. This is just a killer track. Good on you!

Great stuff!
Is that a chorus effect you're using? Imho there's a little bit too much of it, liked the tone on your previous version better. Sounded a bit meaner and grittier.
But that's just my personal preference, I guess this one's a bit closer to the original. And hey, it ain't easy sounding as mean as SRV
Great guitar work tho, and the vocals were really nice!

wow that is one of the best srv tones i have heard in a long time. if you used your pod i could really use that patch but i don't know how you you can get those fingers to me as they are most of it. was that marshall involved in any way? that tone would work well for robin trower tunes as well. lady love? vocals were really good. that is one of the harder srv songs to sing and you did it justice. mix was great too and that guitar playing really made me smile. srv will always live on as long as there are guys like you that capture the essence and the soul of the man and keep reminding us that it is more than just playing the notes. its the feeling, the love of music, and guitar playing that comes from the heart. i don't know how you are going to top this but i'm sure you will find a way. to me this is your best so far. i would write more but i have to go back and listen to it a couple dozen more times. thanks for posting this and making this site the best place to hear true talent once again

Sounds incredible, I think the vox are just a wee bit too up front, to my ears, they should be sitting down in the mix a little more. But great job.:thumb:

Thanks sting, Podster, billandgitana, eamon7, Rythameen and Naif...Naif, I agree wholeheartedly about the effect...I enjoyed playing more without it but it's the effect that SRV uses...there are a few you can use that will do the 'lesley cabinet' thing...I think I used the "auto-vibe" and "rotary drum and horn" for the two I've done so far. It cuts the frequencies and makes it harder to get the more Hendrix-y style going but when I listened to the original, it was full of that swirly effect so I went with trying to get the same sound in the end...prolly to the loss of dynamics to a degree.

eamon...thanks for the comments. I can send you the patch no problem but you'd prolly best ask Rythameen how he gets on with them...the POD settings for this are:

Plexi Variac (same as used for the VH sound believe it or not!)
4 x 12 with 25 greenbacks
Vintage plate on the reverb
Blue Compressor and then one of the effects mentioned above. Both versions were done solely in the no.4 position on the 5 way switch i.e between the neck and middle pickup out of phase. You really gotta tweak the bass up high but ALSO make sure you have lots of presence as well or you lose the top...it can get very muddy!

Vocals were rushed to be honest but there's prolly one more version when I get rid of this fooking flu.

Cheers all. :thumb:

Great tune , nice choice , the guitars sound OK to me , i dont think SRV got the respect he deserved whilst he was with us , which is a big shame , i still think he never really hit the jackpot in a lot of peoples eyes . I remember at the time knowing of SRV , but not really going outa my way to listen to him , so its very sad . But this is a fitting tribute Chris , nice to know his spirit is been kept alive .

Sounds excellent!! Fantastic playing and I personally love the tone. Vocals fit nicely, perhaps just a tad loud. Some awe inspiring playing, I personally would be scared to attempt a SRV tune because even if I could play the notes I couldn't recreate the vibe and attitude but you pulled it off with finesse. :thumb:

Lovely nuance to the picking. At 1:46 the swirly effect was actually very nice. That little spot during the solo at 3:05 TO:06 gave me chills -sweet! I like the tone but somehow the guitar mix needed to penetrate the entire room a bit more. I guess its the difference between a padded studio and ball room. I like the ball room! I liked the vocal. Sometimes not feeling well can help to put across a lyric. Hope you get over this flu quick because they tent to linger. I had the flu a month ago and I still have a lingering cough!

This is fantastic. Vocals are really powerful and sound fine through my monitors and the playing is sublime and not even a hint of gary moore

Excellent work mate - you need to pat yourself on the back. A massive undertaking and very professional results :thumb:

Thanks ALL! Vocals ARE too loud...you should have heard the other fucker that I deleted!!! Still trying to nail how to add effects to the vocals effectively but new sooper dooper mic arriving soon so should improve the situation. I love singing as much as playing the guitar but haven't (like lots of people) got the range so I'm learning to find songs that suit my vocal. Some of the stuff I've got in the pipeline is loads of original stuff for a starters...as for covers, this is a pretty wierd list but here goes!

'Have a Cigar' (found the BEST Dave Gilmour tone by tweaking a Clapton setting)
'Shine On You Crazy Diamond I-VI FULL version with a mate doing sax solo!
'Scuttle Buttin' and 'Lenny'
'Katy' Kelly Joe Phelps...a murder ballad; makes me cry everytime I hear it!
'Wonderful World', 'Dock Of The Bay', 'Diamond Ring'...all acoustic stuff
'Aint No Love In The Heart Of The City'..an old favourite

So busy times what with the Black Rose stuff and recording an album with Paul Logue who used to post here under the name 'Van Hielan'. If it's making music, it's all good.

Thansk for the time and the comments. :thumb:

THE VIBE is what this is all about. You just nailed that SRV thang. Very nicely played, there's a lot of nuance there. The wah solo could use a bit of compression, but overall a very nice production, and your vocals are certainly worthy.

This one's definitely a keeper.
