Buddy is not playing behind Mr. S. That is Irv Cotler. Buddy never played behind him in concert.
that's very strange to hear that.. I know Irv Cotler well but that drum solo after that's life it doesn't sound like him, same for the instrumental break in I've got you under my skin. Of course I based my thoughts on what was written in the description:Buddy rich and his orchestra.. I probably got carried away by that and the imagination did the rest, given the bad quality of the audio. Thanks for the comment, always open to learn

Buddy is playing at the beginning of the tape. The song that the band is finishing escapes me. The only times I am aware of that Mr. S worked just with a big name big band (sans strings) during his concert years were Basie and woody Herman just before "The Main Event" tour in 1974. Performances have circulated from both Vegas and Tahoe confirming this. Sadly, they are in even worse shape than this Philly concert. Even when he worked with Harry James a string section was added.

Just to add to the Buddy Rich discussion, I saw Sinatra at the CNE Stadium, Toronto , Canada on September 2nd, 1984 with the Buddy Rich Band. I still have the half-page add they ran touting Sinatra with the Buddy Rich Band. I can't remember if Rich played throughout Sinatra's whole set because that was more than 30 years ago but I remember Rich playing solo on the drums before Sinatra came on. The cat could pound the skins.

JULY 13TH

Sinatra made his first two commercial recordings with Harry James on this date in 1939, "From The Bottom of My Heart" & "Melancholy Mood". As those are licensed releases, I won't be posting those today but do yourself a favor and give them a listen if you have them in your collection. 76 years later and we're still talking about the scrawny kid from Hoboken.

To Be Perfectly Frank, July 13th, 1954

ENJOY!
Amazing concert from that year! I'm surprised that Sinatra never kept singing "Summer Wind" through out each performance. He put the song back in his set from 1986 to 1994. How's the quality on that concert?

Yes, BR toured quite a bit with Mr. S in the early-mid 80's (see "Concert for the Americas") but he did not perform/accompany while Mr. S was onstage. I find it criminal that they did not make an album together.

Ah yes! The "Mea Culpa" concert. After all the dust settled from the Australian press brouhaha Mr. S was forced to cancel a concert but to make up for it this concert was nationally broadcast with the guarantee that the video would be destroyed immediately after airing. To my knowledge, that was done as this audio from the broadcast is all that survives.

Be warned! After having days off in the Australian dry heat and not rehearsing, you will hear Mr. S makes noises that I did not know were humanly possible!!!!!!

WAS, that's the July 16 show, not the 15th. Methinks he still was in decent voice on this one

I was not aware that he did two post Melbourne performances. I don't see that listed anywhere but that does not mean that it didn't occur. Very interesting. Thanks for the tip.
Listened to the 7/15/74 concert last night and it's sound quality is as good as the 7/16 we all know of. Maybe better because there is little-to-no feedback hum. It's amazing how defiant Mr. S still was and then how he toned it down a bit for the national broadcast the following night. At times he seems to be arrogantly walking thru his performance. The proverbial peacock dance if you will.

And yes, as was earlier noted his voice is much better on 7/15 even though he throws away a few high notes with whistles.
