01 JUL 1986
V2 UPGRADE NOTES: Since V1, which was derived from the best Youtube source I could find, was posted, canali95 sent me a DVD which contained a much better video with a higher average bitrate of 6,609 kb/s (the previously used YT version had an average bitrate of 769 kb/s). This allowed me to take the upscale to 1080p (the YT version did not allow me to upscale beyond 720p without creating significant artifacts).
BACKGROUND: In 1986, Warner Brothers and MTV partnered to host a call-in contest in which the 10,000th caller would be awarded with having the world premiere of Under A Cherry Moon held in their hometown as well as a post-premiere party featuring a performance by Prince & The Revolution. The lucky winner was a then 20-year-old hotel chambermaid named Lisa Barber. According to Prince's publicist in the mid-80s, Robyn Riggs, she determined that "damage control" was needed she read the paper the day following the MTV contest. The media had asked Barber "Oh, are you a big Prince fan?" To this question, Barber responded "Yeah, he’s OK. But I really like Motley Crue! I hope I get to meet Tommy Lee." Riggs immediately traveled to Sheridan in advance of the premiere, to work on turning Barber into a more dedicated Prince fan. This conversion must have been quick and compelling, for at the post-premiere party, Barber exclaimed, "I love Prince. I saw 'Purple Rain' 13 times."
While the production team may have been losing sleep over how Prince would be received in a small western town, Prince was fully undaunted. Prior to the event, Prince informed keyboardist Lisa Coleman, "We're gonna rock Sheridan." The out-of-the way cowboy town was no stranger to visiting dignitaries. Queen Elizabeth II had visited Sheridan in 1984, two years prior to the arrival of Prince. Still, no one knew what to expect when Prince and his colorful entourage arrived. Also in attendance were co-stars Jerome Benton and Kristin Scott-Thomas, Rosanna Arquette, Joni Mitchel and Ray Parker Jr. traveled to Sheridan for the event.
Lisa Barber not only won the opportunity for her hometown to experience the movie premiere and post-premiere party, she also won the opportunity to attend the premiere as Prince's date. Despite the cramped space and the low ceilings of the Holiday Inn venue, Prince and the Revolution put on a very energetic and highly entertaining show. It is both surreal and amusing to see Prince performing for a western audience, most of which were clearly unfamiliar with Prince's music when given the opportunity to sing lines from Raspberry Beret.
In 2018, it was announced that Lisa Barber's 'Cinderella" experience was going to be chronicled in a new movie, "Queen For A Day, in production by Paramount. The same articles revealed that Elizabeth Banks had been tapped to play the role of Lisa Barber. Since there have been no updates on this in the past 7 years, I'm assuming that the project was sidelined.
SOURCE: The EYE 423-424 DVD/CD combo of Prince's performance at Cobo Hall 1986, which included a bonus DVD containing the footage from Prince's post-premiere party performance in Sheridan, WY. This was kindly provided by forum user canali95. This was in NSTC DVD format with 720x480i resolution @ 29.97fps and an average bitrate of 6,609 kb/s. The source audio was an AC-3 320 kb/s 2.0 stream.
CHAPTERS:
01. intro
02. Raspberry Beret
03. Delirious
04. Controversy
05. Mutiny
PROCESSING: Proper upscale to 1080p, with noise reduction, compression artifact removal and de-blurring. Final conversion to 10-bit H.265/MKV. Forum user p.elphick kindly performed a re-sync of the circulating SBD audio for this show and sent me the whole-performance file in lossless FLAC. The SBD audio underwent DC offset correction, phase correction and L/R channel balancing. Following this, it was globally remastered with techniques which included various EQ adjustments, multi-band dynamics processing, adaptive saturation, stereo field optimization, frequency demasking reverb and final level setting. This globally remastered file was re-muxed into the final video render as the default track in FLAC 2.0 format. The unmodified, non-remastered SBD track was re-muxed as the secondary audio track. The source AC-3 320 kb/s 2.0 original audio was remixed as the tertiary audio track, for comparison.
The audio files were re-muxed in this order:
1.) FLAC 2.0 remastered SBD (lossless)
2.) FLAC 2.0 raw SBD (lossless)
3.) AC-3 2.0 original source audio
NOTES: Special thanks goes to p.elphick for performing the A/V synchronization and to canali95 for providing the DVD source used for the visual upgrade.
