"No Guitar...but Plenty of Drums"
Source - Audience Shot
DVD - NTSC
Audio: 224 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Video: 29.970 fps, 720x480
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 0.909
Audio Used - AsYd from dimeadozen (thanks again) - http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=322331
Camera Used - Samsung SMX-F40
Video Editor - Sony Vegas 9 Audio Editor - Cakewalk Producer Image Stabilizer - Deshaker DVD Author - DVD-Lab Pro
Note - This show was shot to highlight the drummer. I have so many shows that show the singer or guitar player for most of the
show. The drummer is just as important. He is usually at the back of the stage hidden behind metal and wood (sometimes this
helps a shy drummer). If there's too much of the drummer... good.
Note 2 - The deshaker plugin was used to steady the video. At times it seems the drumset is floating. Sometimes the video is
out of focus. These are tradeoffs to use Deshaker and keep the picture from moving too much. See the Deshaker comparison
in the Extras menu to see the difference.
Note 3 - It's an SD show. Sometimes the video looks good becuase of the stage light color. At other times it's very blurry/pixeled because the SD camcorder didn't handle it that well. I used Sony Vegas as best I could to make it look good.

Got call from friends on Sunday they wanted to go to the show. I said sure why not let's go the show and have a good time. Plan to film in
effect. Don't have a camcorder. Do some quick research and buy a camcorder Monday evening. Crash course learning and camcorder
discovery Monday night. Do some battery checks and card capacity checks Tuesday morning and drive to Boston Tuesday night.
made the mistake of having a couple of drinks in the parking garage (not a lot - just enough to have impact later). Go in and grab one
more drink from the concessions and sit down. It's 7:45 (show should have started at 7:30). I have to go to the bathroom real bad.
I get up to go and the house lights go down. Return to seat (no bathroom relief).
Set 1 - We were far away (Section 309) and I didn't think anyone would sit in front of us. Everything looks good. No one in front of
us. Then during the intro video all the seats get filled in front of us. Lets' just said I had the fidgety guy in front of me. He itched his
head like 30 times during Set 1.
DVD 1 - Set 1
Spirit of Radio - Filmed okay. Rather Steady.
Time Stand Still - Filmed okay. Rather Steady. But Fidget man strikes.
Presto - I don't know what happened. The camcorder shut off 15 seconds in.
I turned it back on when I realized but lost almost a minute. I filled in the
missing section with shaky Stick It Out footage (more on that later).
Stick It Out - I had to go real bad and ran to the bathroom. I wasn't gone that
long (missed about 2 minutes) sat back down and started again...or so I thought.
Camcorder shut off again. I didn't realize it. and missed...
Working them Angels - Not filmed
Leave That Thing Alone - Not Filmed
Faithless - I thought it was on but was just monitoring the show not filming. The camcorder shut off again but this time it was
because the auto shutoff when not filming engaged. Started back up 1/2 way through Faithless.
BU2B - Filmed okay. Rather Steady.
Freewill - Filmed okay. Rather Steady.
Marathon - Filmed okay. Rather Steady.
Subdivisions - My legs started to cramp up. The camcorder was on my lap. I had to stretch calves. There is shaky video for
about 1 minute of the song. Subdivisions is my favorite drumming song. It is a lesson in independent body movements. I was
not happy when I knew I recorded shaky Subdivisions and even less happy when I reviewed after the show. It was a
combination of a couple of people getting up (end of Set1) and leg fatigue.
DVD 2 - Set 2
I will say Set 2 turned out better than set 1
I think due to Red Barchetta (more on that later...).
Intro Film/Tom Sawyer - A combination of people returning and me trying to get comfortable
to sit still for the next hour or so leads to very shaky footage for the first 2 minutes of Tom Sawyer.
The good news is that Fidget Man has changed seats and this guy in front of me leans towards his
girlfriend away from stage (there's no way they saw this girl in the mezzanine...).
Red Barchetta - Elude the Eyes line brought this very annoying spotlight aimed directly at us. I started to zoom
out and find a better way to shoot which made me back up a little and actually add another member of the band
in the drummer shot. The rest of the show was filmed with the drummer and another method.
YYZ - Rather Steady
Limelight - Rather Steady
The Camera Eye - Rather Steady (probably my 2nd favorite after Subdivions especially the cool rythmic drumming
after "The Focus is Sharp in the City" line. Also there's a slight synch adjustment right at the beginning of the guitar
solo. The camcorder split the video at this point and I lost 2-3 seconds.
Witch Hunt - Rather Steady
Vital Signs - Rather Steady
Caravan - Rather Steady (I missed a cool fill in the middle due to camera move - don't know the song well enough)
Malnar/Drum Solo - Shot most from the big screen. I had to re-synch the audio when I changed to the big screen
and again when I changed back. You might hear a slight rythmic "huh" when it is switched to big screen.
Closer to the Heart - Rather Steady
2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx - Camcorder again split the video here but luckily near the beginning. There's no
audio synch patching but there is a video patch at the beginning.
Far Cry - A sheet or sheen of lighting from the overhead bank of lights made this shot difficult.
La Villa Strangiato - I left camcorder on when they went off and came back on. I wasn't going to film Working Man
(I was going to at least rock out to one song). If I had known "No Guitar" would take up a couple of minutes I would
have not filmed off stage time. There was a race on to see which would end first - Battery Life or Memory Card.
Battery life won and the memory card was full with about a minute to go in La Villa Strangiato.
Working Man - Not Filmed.
Final Notes: This is only the 2nd show I've filmed. I only did this because there aren't shows that are edited to
show when the drummer is doing cool fills. I can't buy DVD with camera angle option only for drummer (RIR
does have La Villa with an option). Genesis "The Way We Walk" DVD is the only true full concert I have that is multi-angle.
I have bought all the DVD's Rush sell. Can they make this one a true
multi-angle production. We have the technology. They aren't lip synching. They actually play their instruments.
Let's see it.
P.S. If you've read this far...there may be people working on a multi-angle of this show. I cannot confirm this oficially (just from word of mouth).
